There’s a pattern I see time and again in my work with couples. Two intelligent, capable people have been quietly unhappy for months — sometimes years — before they finally pick up the phone. Something has happened. A conversation that went too far, a silence that lasted too long, a moment of clarity that said this cannot continue. And in that moment, they begin to wonder whether it’s time to ask for help.

That decision alone takes courage. But then comes the second, often harder challenge: persuading your partner to take that step with you.

“We Should Be Able to Sort This Ourselves”

In the UK, there’s a particular reluctance to seek help with relationships. I hear it constantly from clients, often expressed with a kind of quiet pride: “We’re intelligent people. We should be able to sort this out ourselves.”

I understand that instinct. And I respect it. But I’d gently ask you to consider this: would you expect to service your own car? Diagnose and repair your own computer? Perform your own surgery? Of course not. You’d go to the best expert you could find.

The human being is the most complex system known to mankind. And a couple relationship — two individual human beings with their own histories, fears, needs, and patterns, attempting to build a shared life — is infinitely more complex still. There is no weakness in recognising that. There is only wisdom.

What Is a Great Relationship Actually Worth?

Here’s the question I’d like you to sit with for a moment: what would you spend to feel genuinely happy at home?

We think nothing of booking an expensive holiday, upgrading the car, buying the latest television, or treating ourselves to something luxurious. These things bring pleasure, of course. But they are temporary. A weekend away doesn’t resolve what you come home to. A new purchase doesn’t change the silence across the dinner table.

A truly loving, fulfilling relationship, on the other hand, transforms everything. It’s the foundation upon which all of life’s other experiences sit. When it’s working, everything feels lighter. When it isn’t, even the good moments feel hollow.

And if you have children, the stakes are even higher. Children don’t just listen to what we tell them about love — they watch what we show them. The relationship they witness between you and your partner becomes the template they carry into their own adult lives. Address your relationship now, and that ripple effect travels not just through your family but through generations yet to come. Friends and wider family feel it too. A couple that has found its way back to each other brings a different quality of warmth and presence to everyone around them.

This isn’t just about saving a relationship. It’s about transforming a life.

Once You’ve Decided to Ask for Help — What’s the Best Help You Can Get?

This is where the Duo Coaching Framework becomes relevant — and where I believe we offer something genuinely different.

Most couples therapy takes place in fifty-minute sessions, once a week, with a single therapist. Progress can be slow. The session ends just as something important is emerging. Weeks pass between appointments. Patterns reassert themselves.

The Duo Coaching Framework works differently. Two experienced therapists work together with a couple in extended sessions of three and a half hours, creating the depth and intensity that real change requires. We draw on a range of therapeutic modalities, provide around-the-clock support between sessions, and remain firmly focused on outcomes — not just exploration, but genuine, lasting transformation.

And expertise matters. I completed my doctorate in the phenomenology of relationships, and I have written extensively on the subject. When you invest in your relationship, you deserve to work with someone who has devoted their professional life to understanding exactly what you’re going through — and how to help you through it.

Yes, there are cheaper options. There always are. But the question worth asking is not what’s the lowest cost? It’s what gives us the best possible chance of the relationship we truly want?
