What is
Duo Coaching?
A pioneering co-therapy framework
for intensive couples counselling
Duo Coaching is a distinctive co-therapy framework for couples developed by Dr Neil Wilkie over fifteen years ago. Unlike traditional relationship counselling, which typically involves one therapist working with a couple in short weekly sessions, Duo Coaching brings two experienced therapists together with a couple in extended, intensive sessions designed to create rapid, meaningful change.
The approach emerged from Dr Wilkie’s own dissatisfaction with conventional couples therapy—sessions that felt too short to make real progress, dynamics that left one partner feeling unheard, and a passive approach that seemed to keep couples stuck rather than moving forward. Duo Coaching was designed to address each of these limitations directly.
The Core Principles of Duo Coaching
Two Therapists, Two Perspectives
At the heart of Duo Coaching is the co-therapy model: two therapists working together with every couple. This creates natural balance. Each partner has someone who can fully attend to their perspective while the other therapist holds the wider picture. It eliminates the common fear that a therapist might unconsciously favour one partner over the other.
The two-therapist structure also means that nothing gets missed. While one therapist is actively engaged with a partner, the other can observe body language, emotional shifts, and the subtle dynamics that often reveal more than words. This dual attention allows Duo Coaching to work faster and dig deeper than single-therapist approaches.
Intensive, Extended Sessions
Traditional couples counselling typically offers 50-minute sessions—enough time to open difficult topics but rarely enough to work through them. Duo Coaching sessions typically begin with a 3.5-hour intensive, giving couples the space to move beyond surface conversations into the deeper patterns that shape their relationship.
This extended format means couples leave each session having made genuine progress, not simply having identified problems to think about until the following week. Most couples complete their work within six sessions spread over three to four months—a fraction of the time many spend in traditional weekly therapy.
Outcome-Focused from the Start
Duo Coaching begins with clarity. Before therapeutic work begins, both partners articulate what they want to achieve—not vague hopes for improvement, but specific, coherent outcomes that give the work direction. This outcome focus shapes everything that follows, ensuring sessions move purposefully toward defined goals rather than circling indefinitely around problems.
Continuous Support Between Sessions
Relationship difficulties don’t observe office hours. Couples working with Duo Coaching receive unlimited telephone and email support between sessions, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When a crisis emerges at midnight or a question arises over the weekend, support is available in the moment—not days later at the next scheduled appointment.
Theoretical Foundations
Duo Coaching draws on multiple therapeutic traditions, tailored to each couple’s specific needs. Dr Wilkie’s training spans counselling, clinical hypnotherapy, family and systemic constellations, Gestalt, transactional analysis, Clean Language and Symbolic Modelling, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
The framework’s theoretical foundations were examined in depth through Dr Wilkie’s doctoral research at Middlesex University, completed in 2024. His thesis, The Phenomenology of Relationships, offered both a critique of existing relationship therapies and a rigorous examination of the principles underlying Duo Coaching and its sister framework, The Relationship Paradigm.
Dr Wilkie is currently writing three books on relationships for Routledge, further developing the evidence base and practical applications of his approach.

Our Process: How Duo Coaching Works
Every couple’s journey is unique, but the Duo Coaching process follows a clear structure designed to create meaningful change as efficiently as possible.
Step 1: Initial Contact
Your journey begins with a phone call, email, or video consultation. This initial conversation allows us to understand your situation and for you to ask questions about how we work. We aim to respond quickly—often the same day—because we know that reaching out for help takes courage, and momentum matters.
Under normal circumstances, we can see new couples for their first session within one to two weeks. For couples in acute crisis, we work to arrange the first appointment even sooner.
Step 2: The First Session (approximately 3.5 hours)
The first session is the longest and most intensive. Both partners meet with both therapists—Neil and Maria—together. This extended time allows us to:
Hear both of your stories fully, without the pressure of a ticking clock.
Understand how you got to where you are now—the history, the patterns, the turning points.
Get clarity on the outcomes you both want—specific, coherent goals that will guide our work together.
Begin the therapeutic work immediately, so you leave the first session having already made progress.
We create a safe space with no judgement, where both of you can express everything that needs to be expressed. Having two therapists ensures balance—each of you will feel heard and supported.
Step 3: Ongoing Sessions (approximately 2.5 hours each)
Subsequent sessions are typically around two and a half hours. The work is a mix of:
Working on the ‘Us’: The relationship itself—communication patterns, connection, intimacy, shared goals.
Individual work: Addressing personal issues or unhelpful patterns of behaviour that one or both partners bring to the relationship.
Dealing with the past: Processing events, hurts, or traumas that continue to affect the present.
Creating the future: Building the relationship you both want, not just fixing what’s broken.
Sessions are spaced to allow time for reflection and for changes to embed. There will be meaningful homework between sessions—this isn’t passive therapy where change happens only in the room.
Step 4: Support Between Sessions
This is where Duo Coaching differs most visibly from traditional therapy. Between sessions, you have unlimited access to support via phone, email, or text—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
If a crisis emerges, a difficult conversation goes wrong, or you simply need guidance in the moment, we’re there. Our clients consistently tell us this between-session support is one of the most valuable aspects of working with us. Problems get resolved as they happen, not left to fester until the next appointment.
Step 5: Completion
Most couples complete their work within six sessions spread over three to four months. Some need fewer; some need more. We don’t impose arbitrary limits or stretch the work unnecessarily.
We finish each session naturally rather than when a clock dictates—you can relax knowing we won’t cut you off mid-conversation. And we finish the overall work when you’ve achieved your outcomes, not when a predetermined number of sessions has elapsed.
Alternative: The Intensive Programme
For couples in acute crisis or with limited time due to demanding schedules, we offer an even more intensive option: a two-day programme where you stay at a nearby hotel and spa in the New Forest. This typically involves four face-to-face sessions over two days, followed by further sessions (face-to-face or via video call) at appropriate intervals.
This format allows couples to immerse themselves fully in the work without the distractions of daily life, often creating breakthrough progress in a compressed timeframe.
A Premium, Intensive Service
Duo Coaching is a premium service, and we are transparent about that. The investment reflects the intensity of what we offer: two experienced practitioners in every session, extended session times that allow for real depth, unlimited between-session support, and a pace of work that achieves in months what traditional weekly therapy often fails to achieve in years.
Many of our clients come to us having already spent significant time and money on conventional relationship counselling that, in their words, got them nowhere. The Duo Coaching approach is designed to be different—more intensive, more focused, and ultimately more effective.
We work with only a small number of couples at any one time. This allows us to give each couple the attention they deserve and to maintain our availability for the 24/7 support that is central to how we work. It also means we can usually see new clients within a week or two of their first contact.
Comparing our fees directly to traditional relationship counsellors is not comparing like with like. A single Duo Coaching session involves two therapists, lasts two to three times longer than a standard therapy hour, and comes with unlimited support until your next session. When measured by outcomes rather than hours, our clients consistently tell us the investment was worth it.
Who Duo Coaching Helps
Duo Coaching works with couples at all stages—those in acute crisis, those recovering from affairs or betrayals, those who have drifted apart over years, and those simply wanting to strengthen an already good relationship. The framework is equally effective with married couples, civil partners, and cohabiting partners of any sexual orientation.
Beyond romantic partnerships, Duo Coaching also supports family relationships (parent-child, siblings, in-laws) and business partnerships where relationship difficulties are affecting both personal wellbeing and professional outcomes.
The Practitioners
Duo Coaching was created and is delivered by Dr Neil Wilkie and Maria Hudson. Neil brings his doctoral research, his extensive media work as a relationship expert (recognised by The Times, The Sun, The Independent, and The Mail), and decades of experience including a prior career in business leadership. Maria brings over 25 years of counselling experience, a background in career transition work, and membership of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
They are business partners rather than life partners—an intentional choice that brings different experiences and perspectives to their work without presenting themselves as an idealised couple.

Wide Range Of Tools, Techniques, Skills
Dr. Neil Wilkie
Neil believes that one of the greatest gifts in life is a loving and fulfilling relationship with another person.
But who teaches us how to have great relationships?
If we are lucky our parents had a great relationship, and we can model that. I learned by trial and error and with lots and lots of errors!
Neil has a wide range of life experiences and training that enables him to deal quickly and effectively with relationship issues. He has had a long and successful business career during which time he also spent many years doing voluntary counselling. He decided, many years ago to move on from business to his real passion of helping people have better relationships and making a real difference to their lives.
Neil developed the unique concept of Duo Coaching 15 years ago. After unsatisfactory experiences with traditional relationship counselling during an earlier marriage Neil developed a more outcome focused and supportive approach.
Neil is an author, relationship expert and qualified psychotherapist. He has worked with hundreds of couples over the last fifteen years to help them move from a place of despair and unhappiness to one of closeness and harmony. He created the Relationship Paradigm Model, an online couples therapy platform, www.relationshipparadigm.com and has written two books on relationships. In the two years, Neil has written over 370 articles on Relationships for national and international newspapers and publications. He has reached an audience of over 2.6 million print readers and 2.8 billion online readers.
The Sun newspaper calls him ‘The Relationship Guru’ and The Times, The Independent, The Mail and others call him ‘The Relationship Expert’.
Outside of work Neil is a keen sailor, having done two Transatlantic’s and many races and cruises on boats from 12’ to 200’. He and his wife Gwen are now sailing their boat slowly, a week a month, down to the Mediterranean. When on dry land he also flies, climbs, cycles and walks.
Neil has also learned from his own relationships having been married, widowed and now recently married again. He has two adopted daughters.
Neil has a wide variety of training, in Counselling, Life Coaching, Business Coaching, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Family Constellations, Systemic Constellations, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Clean Space and Language, Symbolic Modelling and is a Master Practitioner in NLP.
His Doctorate on ‘The Phenomenology of Relationships’ is an autoethnographic investigation into the world of relationships and love; a critique of relationship therapies and psychotherapeutic modalities and review of his two frameworks; The Relationship Paradigm and Duo Coaching.
He is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts. member of The Association of Coaching, Association of NLP.
Neil believes that we should never stop learning and should allow ourselves to learn from the past but move on quickly to the future that we want to be having. He loves his work with Maria and feels very privileged to be invited into couple’s lives and able to help facilitate real, positive and lasting change.
Neil and Maria have different backgrounds and styles, but they share values and approaches. They have found working together to be a remarkably effective way of working with couples together to help resolve relationship issues. The fact that they are business (and not life) partners is great as they bring their own approaches and experiences into the sessions with clients and do not present themselves as an ‘idealised’ couple.
Come and work with Neil and Maria at Duo Coaching, in Hampshire.
