Relationships: A View from a Therapist’s Chair

As I settle into my chair, preparing for another couple to walk through the door, I’m struck by how far I’ve come on this journey. Twenty years ago, I never would have imagined myself here, let alone pioneering a new approach to relationship therapy. But life has a way of leading us down unexpected paths, doesn’t it?

My name is Neil Wilkie, and I’m the creator of the Duo Coaching Framework. This book is an invitation into my world – a world where love, connection, and healing intersect in the most profound ways. But before we dive into the stories of the couples I’ve worked with, I want to share with you how Duo Coaching came to be, and what it’s really like to sit in this chair day after day, holding space for the complexities of human relationships.

The seeds of Duo Coaching were planted in the soil of my own disappointment. Years ago, when my second marriage was struggling, I reluctantly agreed to try couples counselling. I say reluctantly because, like many men, I was sceptical of therapy. But I wanted to give our relationship every chance, so off we went.

What followed was a series of frustrating, unsatisfying sessions that left me feeling unheard and even more hopeless about our future. The therapist seemed ill-equipped to handle the dynamics between us, often allowing my wife to dominate the conversation while I sat in silence, my own needs and perspective going unexplored. The sessions were too short, the approach too passive, and the results non-existent.

It was during those sessions that I first thought, “There has to be a better way.” Little did I know that thought would eventually lead me to create that better way myself.

Duo Coaching emerged from a desire to address everything I found lacking in traditional couples therapy. Here are the key principles that make it unique:

  1. Two therapists, not one: This ensures balanced attention and perspective.
  2. Longer, more intensive sessions: We typically start with a 3.5-hour session to dive deep.
  3. A focus on outcomes: We work with couples to clearly define what they want to achieve.
  4. Integration of multiple modalities: We draw from various therapeutic approaches to tailor our work to each couple’s needs.
  5. Attention to the individual and the relationship: We explore the ‘You’, ‘Me’, and ‘Us’ of every partnership.
  6. 24/7 support between sessions: We’re there for our clients when they need us most.

But Duo Coaching is more than just a set of principles. It’s a philosophy, an approach to relationships that recognizes their complexity and honours the individuals within them. When a couple walks into our space, they’re not just clients – they’re whole people with rich histories, deep-seated patterns, and often, hidden hopes for their future together.

So what’s it like, sitting in this chair? It’s an incredible privilege, first and foremost. To be invited into the most intimate corners of people’s lives, to witness their vulnerabilities and their strengths, is something I never take for granted. It’s also an immense responsibility. The work we do here can change the course of not just two lives, but entire families and future generations.

There are days when the weight of that responsibility feels heavy. When a couple is locked in bitter conflict, or when past traumas resurface, bringing waves of pain into the room. In those moments, I lean on my training, my experience, and the presence of my co-therapist to navigate the stormy waters.

But there are also moments of pure magic. The moment when a couple who hasn’t touched in months reaches for each other’s hands. The breakthrough when someone finally voices a need they’ve been afraid to express for years. The tears of relief and reconnection when forgiveness begins to take root.

In this book, I’ll take you inside those moments. You’ll meet couples at various stages of their journeys – some on the brink of separation, others looking to deepen an already strong bond. You’ll see how we apply the Duo Coaching Framework to address issues like communication breakdowns, infidelity, loss of intimacy, and more.
My hope is that through these stories, you’ll gain not just insight into the world of relationship therapy, but also practical wisdom you can apply to your own relationships. Because while every couple is unique, there are universal truths about love, connection, and human nature that we can all learn from.

So, are you ready to step into my world? To see relationships through the eyes of someone who has dedicated their life to understanding and nurturing them? If so, turn the page. The journey begins now…
